Material Research
Since returning from the Winter Residency I have spent most of my time researching and experimenting with different papers and other materials that could potentially be used for the light drawings. The above images show some of the samples I have been collecting. I have been researching Mingeishi, Tsumago and Shoji paper, all of which are from Japan. I have only just realised there is a book restorer who has a studio in the same building as me and she has the most amazing paper collection.
I have started a new light drawing using Spider Silk Tissue Paper which is similar to Japanese Kozo paper. The paper is very transparent and also super strong. I have only just started the drawing so I don't have much to show but I have put a few images in anyway.
Due to the nature of this paper, the pin holes are very hard to see and when held up to the light you can barely see anything at all as the paper is so transparent the light is diffused across the entire surface. I will finish this drawing anyway and see what it looks like at the end.
